3) Thesis (Lexi)
In Farewell to Manzanar Jeanne Wakatsuki family was wrongfully imprisoned after the bombing of Pearl Harbor because they were Japanese Americans. They did nothing wrong, but everyone thought they were the enemy because of how they looked. Stereotypes were everywhere in the 1900’s and today. Most immigrants were being stereotyped because people didn't like that they were in their country and that they needed to go back where they came from because they weren't American. Stereotypes can really hurt people, and change their life forever. No one should be treated differently because of how they look. Everyone is the same, inside and out.

Stereotypes about women. Do they still exist today?
By: Lexi Stendalen
When we hear the word stereotypes, what comes into our heads?  Right away I think that using a stereotype is how we think people look and act. Stereotypes can be a good thing and a bad thing. From listening to Taming of the Shrew, watching 10 things I Hate About You, and reading “The Goode and the Badde” stereotypes are surely involved with each of these stories, mostly relating to stereotypes about girls. Stereotypes do still exist today. Taming of the Shrew and “The Goode and the Badde,” they represent modern stereotypes in the past about women, while in 10 things I hate about you, advertising, and sports there are stereotypes about women but not as modern as they were before.

In Taming of the Shrew and “ The Goode and the Badde” both of these stories show stereotypes about women in the modern time. “ The Goode and the Badde”  shows us different meanings of a good and a bad wife in the past. Some of their descriptions that they use we would never describe our spouse that way. “ She is a spice of Madness, a spark of Mischief, a touch of Poison, and a fear of Destruction” (“The Goode and the Badde”). Today, we would never use these kinds of words, simply, wow, she is a mean girl, or what is her problem as what we would say today about this person. When describing a good wife we may still describe them the same way but in a different meaning. “She is her husband's Jewel, her childrens joy, her neighbor’s love. She is Gods blessing, and Mans happiness, Earths honor, and Heavens creature” (“The Godde and the Badde”). We may describe a wife this way but to make it simpler we would just call her a perfect, kind and loving wife. We don’t need all that other nonsense, all we need is to tell her that we love her. In Taming of the Shrew stereotypes are shown towards women by having them be seen like they don't have a proper place in marriage and society. “Katherine the curst! A title for a maid of all titles the worst” (1.2.9). When Grumio says this quote he is basically saying that Katherine is a bad person and that she should be ashamed of herself. No one in Padua wants to be heard them be called like Grumio did to Katherine. It is telling her and other women that if they are called this then it is the worst reputation for a Elizabethan women. In our society today, if we were to be called something it could ruin our reputation but we just simply get over it and move on with our lives. But sometimes in our lives we women are used in the most useless ways. “ I come to wive it wealthily in Padua; if wealthily, then happily in Padua”(1.2.10). This is saying that once men see women that have money they instantly fall in love with them because then he can use her money to make him happy. They may say that they love their new wife but really its all about the money. We should not be used that way just because we have money. We still have people like this in our world, using people and marrying them for their money. It’s just sickening that people are like that. When we have money we don't just want a man that just wants our money, we want someone to love us. Reading these quotes, and how they describe women in modern time, it really shows me and others what it was like back then for them and how they were treated. Stereotypes are nothing like they were back then, we still judge people on how they look and act but we just don't use those kinds of descriptions anymore like in 10 Things I Hate About You, they use more of what our stereotypes are today.

In 10 Things I Hate About You, stereotypes are shown towards women but in a totally different way than they were in Taming of the Shrew and “The Goode and the Badde.” In this movie it shows us how women are treated now in this century. “ You’re 18, you don’t know what you want. And you won’t know what you want til you’re 45, and even if you get it, you’ll be too old to use it”(10 Things I Hate About You). This tells us that we are  stupid and don’t know what we want to do with our life. It says that we won't be able to make our own decisions in our lives when we are young and when we are even older. We sometimes have these conversations about one another that we are stupid enough to not know what we are doing with our lives, but we are smarter than they think. We aren’t just some dumb blonde to them, we are more than that. Sometimes in our lives we women do act in some ways that aren’t perfect to one another. “ Just cause you’re beautiful, that doesn’t mean that you can treat people like they don’t matter”(10 Things I Hate About You). When Cameron says this quote to Bianca he really means it. He doesn’t want a girl that will treat people bad just because she wants to make them feel bad and I think Bianca knows this and thats when she realizes that she needs to change her attitude. We women can be a b**** sometimes but we really can be a nice, down to earth kind of girl, it just takes us a while sometimes to show people this side of us and when people don’t see this side they think that they have to make fun of us and treat us horribly because of it but we are genuinely amazing girls. That's why in today’s society we have some of these problems in our lives today when it comes to women and stereotypes. This is a big problem for us in advertisements and sports.

When we watch advertisements or sports on tv, we sometimes see people picking on us women and girls for how we act, look, and how we run our lives. Just recently there was a Super Bowl commercial that came out that was called “ Like a Girl” and first it showed girls in there teens and boys showing how us girls would act throwing a ball, running and all sorts of stuff that they thought we would do horrible, but then they asked little girls how we would act running, and throwing and they showed how fast they could run and throw and it was amazing how the difference was when we asked grown up girls and boys compared to the little girls. “ When people watch the video, we know it changes their perception of the phrase ‘like a girl’ and it makes a difference for girls confidence”(Morrison). Watching this advertisement and really listening to what they were talking about, I do believe that this commercial changed how people see us girls and that we aren’t as stupid as they think we really are. The producers wanted others to think when watching this commercial how this can change their thoughts of the meaning ‘like a girl’. They wanted something good out of this advertisement. “ More people can join us to champion girls confidence and change the meaning of ‘like a girl’ from an insult into something positive and amazing”(Morrison). This advertisement really helped our society truly learn the real meaning of ‘like a girl’ and it will forever change the way people think about us girls and how we act. Now when it comes to sports and stereotypes about women they show how women shouldn’t be playing sports and that it should be all men. “Women forged their own careers in athletics not because of their gender, but because they proved they could be among the best at their profession”(McHenry). Women wanted to prove that sports is not all guys, girls are just like guys and we can do anything a guy can. Sports are not just played by one gender they are played by both. “Regardless of gender perception, it’s the reality that matters-a reality women have the power to create for themselves”(McHenry). Women have the right to do anything they want to and no one can take that away from us. We women have the same rights as men so why can’t we do what they do. We are all the equal, lets keep it that way from now on.

So, what are stereotypes? Are they just something that people classify people of and judge people by them, no, stereotypes have changed over time and will keep on changing through the years. Stereotypes of women will always change, whether it be in Taming of the Shrew, “The Goode and the Badde”, 10 Things I Hate About You, advertisements, and sports, stereotypes of women have changed and they will keep on changing whether it is on the good side or the bad side, we just have to live life the way we want to live it.
